What: The 1st Pursuit of a Green Planet Youth Green Dinner
When: Monday June 22, 2009 - 6:30pm – 9:30pm
Where: Mount Baker Community Club
2811 Mount Rainier Dr S
Seattle 98144

Seattle based talk radio host Keith Tucker, photojournalist and filmmaker Inye Wokoma and filmmaker and Evergreen State College professor, Dr. Gilda Sheppard, have teamed up to produce a new documentary film and project, “Pursuit of A Green Planet (POAGP)” Using the power of the media and grassroots activism, the POAGP production team set out to develop an innovative approach to promote their film project and serve the community at the same time. The result is the first Seattle Area Youth Green Dinner.

The dinners are set in urban communities and designed to introduce new people, especially youth, to delicious, healthy vegetarian food while promoting our film project. All attendees will be able to interact with Health educators, Hip Hop artists, members of our film team and the health professionals that will help Keith get his body back in shape.

“As we continue to develop and promote our film project we felt one of the most important things we could do was make our concept as real as possible to our supporters”, says Keith Tucker. “If we can introduce people to and get them eating the food, it will be a major step in the right direction. We believe the Green Dinners can help change people’s lives even before the film hits the big screen.”

The evening’s program will be emceed by local vegetarian Hip Hop artist Shyan Selah. Selah, an entrepreneur and youth outreach activist, has established local partnerships with the Jimi Hendrix Foundation (of which Shyan served as a spokesperson), Jimi Hendrix’s Liquid Experience brand, the Southwest Boys & Girls Club of King County, and the Dr. Mimms Academies for Suspended and Expelled Youth. Since he and his company, Brave New World, Inc, expanded business operations to Los Angeles this year, he’s continued his youth outreach programs with the “Stay in sChOOL” Tour throughout Los Angeles County to start this fall. The tour has caught the attention of Darryl “DMC” McDaniels from the legendary hip hop group and now Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, Run DMC and DMC has pledged to join Shyan’s “Stay in sChOOL” tour this September. In addition to hosting the Seattle Area Youth Green Dinner, Shyan Selah will also perform selected tracks from his debut album Brave New World.

The dinner’s keynote speaker is Dr. Che Joplin, chiropractic doctor and co-author of I Am Hip Hop I Am Health will speak on the importance of connecting health issues with Hip Hop as a cultural force for positive change.

About the Documentary:

Pursuit of a Green Planet (POAGP) is the first documentary film project about Hip Hop, health and the green movement. The film takes a critical look at the connections between food, culture, economics and the epidemic of lifestyle related disease plaguing America’s youth. Keith is a regular guy who will become a living experiment as he makes the radical transition from your average American diet and lifestyle to a truly green, organic vegan lifestyle. He will be our guide on a journey of discovery as we learn how our food today actually makes us sick, the role corporation’s play in determining what we consume, the history of chemicals in our food chain, how our everyday eating habits can become deadly and what we can do to combat these realities.

Keith and company will travel the country on the Greenhound, a bus converted to run off of pure and recycled vegetable oil.. On the journey with Keith will be two youth who have severe and immediate health issues related to their diet and lifestyle. These youth are at a crucial crossroads where they have to change their lifestyle or risk a dramatic decrease in their health and quality of life. Our travelers will have to meet some of the biggest personalities in Hip Hop, all of whom are long time vegetarians and vegans. Saul Williams, Justin Bua, Persia White, Stic Man, KRS One and others will meet our travelers and make appearances in the film.
The Seattle Area Youth Green Dinner is being hosted in conjunction with Vegetarians of Washington, the largest vegetarian society in the United States. Financial support for the event is coming from numerous community members and the King County Department of Public Health Environmental Health Services Division.
