Meet three operations experts who will share ways they have used sustainability to identify and implement operational improvements that have achieved near-term return on investment for their businesses.

Operational efficiency is essential to remaining competitive in the global economy today. It can mean the difference between staying in business, or not. Particularly in energy-intensive industries, organizations are using sustainability as a key lever to drive near-term return on investment and establish governance frameworks to continuously improve their operating model.

The Panel:

Jim Short, from WaferTech , leads his organization's sustainability efforts as Director of Facilities and Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS). Jim will discuss how WaferTech uses sustainability to remain competitive in the global semiconductor manufacturing space and, in particular, will share information about a recent sustainability project that created a 3,700,000 kW-hour annual savings, and another project that led to WaferTech achieving a 90% reduction in hazardous waste disposal amounts at its Camas, WA manufacturing facility.

Romana Cohen, from the non-profit Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA) in Portland, plays a leadership roll on her organization's green team, SustaiNEEA. The team measures and tracks the organization's greenhouse gas emissions and engages employees in waste stream, travel, and commuting footprint reduction strategies. The team seeks to incorporate true triple bottom line thinking into the fabric of their organization. Romana will share example case studies of how SustaiNEEA has targeted costs savings through operational improvement initiatives.

Jim Hanley, Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Manager at Terex in Seattle is responsible for compliance and sustainable business practices at nine manufacturing sites in five states. Terex is a worldwide manufacturer of heavy equipment such as cranes, material handlers, and paving equipment and has energy and waste stream management needs. Jim has extensive experience training staff to implement changes for improving processes and improving the company's environmental footprint.
