Passive House Northwest 2013 Annual Conference - Tipping The Scale Toward High Performance Building
Passive House is a game changer. It enables designers and builders to achieve revolutionary gains in energy efficiency and building performance at little or no additional construction cost. Previously daunting challenges – ¬like the energy goals of Living Building Challenge and Architecture 2030, or the imperative for higher energy performance in building code – are surmountable when Passive House is integrated into practice and policy.
The Passive House NW 2013 Annual Conference, to be held all day on Friday, March 15, at Seattle Pacific University, will examine the ways that Passive House is tipping the scale toward performance building.
Earth Day founder and Bullitt Foundation President Denis Hayes will deliver the keynote address, placing Passive House in the context of a total-sustainability agenda using the Bullitt Center, a Living Building Challenge project, as case study.
J.O. Dockx, Director for Energy at the Brussels Institute for Management of the Environment, will deliver the featured presentation, discussing the public-private Exemplary Buildings Program that has produced 1.5 million square feet of high performance building in Brussels in a few short years. Passive House has been so integral to the success of the program that Brussels will require all new construction to meet the Passive House standard by 2015.
The conference’s workshop sessions will follow two tracks. The main track will provide a primer on Passive House design and construction, with real-world case studies presented by Northwest Passive House practitioners. The second, advanced track will provide practical detail about the routes to Passive House certification, including presentations about Passive House Institute US/PHIUS+ certification, Passive House Academy certification and WUFI Passive.
