Food Bank Coordinator (Lutheran Volunteer Corps Position)

This is a paid full-time, one-year commitment volunteer position through Lutheran Volunteer Corps (LVC). Benefits include: $650-680 monthly stipend, shared housing provided with supportive network of volunteers, medical and dental benefits, monthly transportation stipend, training provided, three LVC retreats a year, local support committee in place, great neighborhood. Provides experience in the non-profit community, hunger issues, computer skill building, networking, and social justice and community building opportunities. The service year is August 2011-2012.

Responsibilities:
• Coordinate Food Bank activities for the public three days per week at scheduled operating times, which includes one evening shift (until 6:30 PM). Also open two Mondays per month for TEFAP distributions (government commodities).
• Obtain demographic information on all Food Bank and La Cocina Hot Meal Program participants for reporting to funders, including the State of Washington and United Way.
• Coordinate La Cocina Hot Meal Program Monday-Friday from 12:00-1:00 PM.
• Complete annual and semi-annual reports for funders.
• Coordinate translation services with the Red Cross to ensure demographic information is collected on all limited English speaking participants.
• Input data on an on-going basis on Food Bank participants in Food Bank data collection software as well as in organization-wide database.
• Input data on an on-going basis for La Cocina Hot Meal participants in organization-wide database.
• Conduct a sampling of surveys on Food Bank participants and La Cocina participants for United Way outcomes.
• Assist the Food Stamp Outreach Coordinator in meeting with eligible individuals and families.
• Assist with billing and reporting for the City of Seattle, EFAP, Northwest Harvest, Food Lifeline and TEFAP for the Food Bank and La Cocina Hot Meal programs.
• Attend monthly city-wide food bank and meals partnership meetings; including bulk buy committee meetings once per month.
• Attend weekly staff discussions (charlas) on social justice topics.
• Place food orders for Food Bank and La Cocina Hot Meal on a weekly basis.
• Perform administration tasks related to the operation of the Food Bank and La Cocina Hot Meal Program.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
• Coordinate with Lettuce Link and local community gardens to distribute seeds and fresh produce.
• Work with volunteers and staff to coordinate food drives on a monthly basis or as needed.

Required Qualifications:
Skills needed include good writing ability and an ability to communicate clearly. Personal characteristics needed include strong organizational and coordination skills, an ability to work well with people, a desire to learn about social justice and human services, ability to organize volunteers, and ability to work independently as well as in groups. An interest and commitment to providing service to communities of color, ability to work flexible hours (including evenings and weekends) and a completed Bachelor of Arts degree by the time position starts. This position is great for someone interested in learning about non-profit organizations, food insecurity, access low-income families have to nutritious food, volunteer coordination, community action agencies, advocacy, social justice work and supportive services for low-income communities.

Desired Skills:
Excellent organizational skills, ability to communicate effectively both with program staff and potential donors, an ability to work in a team as well as independently, and attention to detail. Some computer proficiency or a willingness to learn new computer programs preferred – position utilizes MS Word, Excel, Mail Merge, Outlook, Publisher and Access. Bilingual in Spanish and English.
