Does your organization have any projects that could use the support of a UW intern or two this winter?

The UW Environmental Studies program requires its seniors to do a capstone project, and most choose to intern with one of our community partners. We require our students to devote at least 150 hours to such internships (240 hours for honors students). We partner with nonprofits, businesses, and government agencies throughout the Puget Sound region.

In general, our capstone interns bring an impressive skill set and a great deal of enthusiasm to the table. They’re all UW seniors with at least two years of coursework in the natural sciences and one year in policy/planning. They also work for free.

Though we do not expect our community partners to compensate our interns, we do ask them to find meaningful projects. In the past, our interns have created webpages for the Washington Toxics Coalition; helped O'Brien and Company gather information required to get LEED certification for a new building; did research to help the EPA identify potentially responsible parties at several Superfund sites; coordinated site visits for wetland specialists at Ecology; and build a children's garden at Greenwood Elementary.

In general, we allow our partners a large amount of flexibility in setting internship structure and timing, but most students tend to favor projects that they can complete during the UW’s winter quarter, Dec/Jan to March/April.

If you could use a skilled UW intern or two this winter, send me an e-mail or
give me a call, and I’ll do my best to help you out.
