Position description
The Volunteer Vacation Intern is a seasonal field-based position located at various USFS Forest and National Parks. The intern will work as an assistant crew leader on trail and help manage camp for WTA’s Volunteer Vacation program. The intern works directly with the Chief Crew Leader and reports directly to WTA’s Project Coordinator. Position is based out of Seattle.
Specific Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Safely motivate and lead a crew of ten volunteers of diverse backgrounds and ages
• Work directly with Chief Crew Leader
• Supervise volunteers at camp
• Assist with set up and break down of camp
• Engage volunteers in all aspects of camp life
• Provide support to crew leader on trail projects
• Remain calm and manage emergency situations
About WTA
Washington Trails Association (WTA) is a non-profit organization helping to protect the hiking trails of Washington. Our primary focus is keeping trails open to hikers through maintenance and advocacy. With more than 700 work parties annually, WTA has one of the largest volunteer trail maintenance programs in the country. Throughout the year, volunteers maintain, repair and build hiking trails throughout Washington State.
Schedule
The work weeks run from Saturday morning to the following Saturday afternoon, with the next 6 days off. The intern will camp during the work week.
Desired Qualifications
• Experience working in outdoor setting
• Have ability to work independently, but also contribute to a team effort
• Skills in trail maintenance and building preferred, but not necessary
• Must be comfortable camping and living in an backcountry environment
• Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to insure a fun, safe, and quality volunteer experience
• Must be available from the end of May through the end of August
• WFA or WFR certification
• Valid driver’s license
• Reliable vehicle (WTA provides mileage reimbursement)
Compensation is a stipend of $300/week, plus all meals provided
