Volunteer Coordinator (Lutheran Volunteer Corps Position)

This is a paid full-time, one-year commitment volunteer position through Lutheran Volunteer Corps (LVC). Benefits include: $680-695 monthly stipend, shared housing provided with supportive network of volunteers, medical and dental benefits, monthly transportation stipend, training provided, three LVC retreats a year, local support committee in place, great neighborhood. The service year is August 2011-2012.

Founded in 1972, El Centro de la Raza works with community members to develop volunteer opportunities with staff and community members that support our community building services and programs. Our volunteer program includes coordinating volunteers for programs, events and special initiatives, cultivating volunteers as donors, recognizing volunteers, and building volunteerism infrastructure. The ongoing support of our volunteers allows El Centro to continue to provide quality services to low-income communities and communities of color. The Volunteer Coordinator develops volunteer opportunities, recruits, and coordinates volunteers for programs, events while cultivating volunteers to become donors in coordination with our development team. Provides experience in non-profit fundraising and event planning, computer skill building, networking, and social justice and community building opportunities.

Responsibilities:
• Develop and coordinate the volunteerism program including program goals, objectives and strategies
• Carryout volunteer plan and administrative systems, including volunteer marketing, recruiting, screening, intake, tours, orientation, training, supervision policies and follow volunteer policy guidelines
• Collaboratively plan strategies to cultivate volunteers as donors and develop cultivation opportunities
• Work with program staff to identify and develop meaningful volunteer opportunities and professional volunteer job descriptions
• Follow the Volunteer Impact Program implementation work plan and track and report data as required
• Develop a targeted recruitment plan to outreach to corporate volunteers and groups, including making presentations to corporate and professional groups
• Develop recruitment plan for reaching more skilled volunteers
• Assist with marketing, outreach and public relations related to the volunteer program
• Develop procedures for volunteer retention and recognition; coordinate thank yous
• Track and maintain all volunteer information, hours and other data in Salesforce database and using other technological methods
• Coordinate the development of evaluation methods and feedback tools
• Evaluate the effectiveness of the volunteer program and develop sustainable practices and procedures
• Plan and present volunteer opportunities at the monthly Café con El Centro breakfast and tour
• Develop volunteer fundraising strategies while working collaboratively with the Development Team
• Coordinate volunteers for the annual auction, tax preparation, legal clinics, donor cultivation tasks, United Way Day of Caring, Cinco de Mayo, Día de los Muertos, community events and other events
• Develop procedures for large event and large group volunteers, track hours and coordinate with staff
• Develop lead and volunteer duties and coordinate leads for the auction banquet
• Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:
Skills needed include good writing abilities and an ability to communicate clearly. Personal characteristics needed include strong organizational and coordination skills, attention to detail, a desire to learn about fundraising and event planning, an ability to organize volunteers, and an ability to work independently as well as in group settings. An interest and commitment to providing service to communities of color, ability to work flexible hours (including evenings and weekends) and a completed Bachelor of Arts degree by the time position starts. This position is great for someone interested in learning about non-profit development, volunteer coordination, event planning, community action agencies, social justice advocacy, and supportive services for low-income communities. Must be bilingual in Spanish and English.

Desired Skills:
Excellent organizational skills, ability to communicate effectively with volunteers, program staff and potential donors, an ability to work in a team as well as independently, and strong attention to detail. Some computer proficiency or a willingness to learn new computer programs preferred – positions utilize MS Word, Excel, Mail Merge, Outlook, Publisher, Adobe and Salesforce database system.
