Position Duties

This position will work collaboratively with other City staff working on sustainable community initiatives, neighborhood planning, urban planning and design, and green building. This position will have a focus on components of the Mayor’s environmental priorities specific to sustainable communities and green building. Major areas of responsibility: developing policies and programs related to advancing sustainable communities; completing LEED for Neighborhood Development assessment of South Lake Union – a LEED-ND Pilot Project; partnering with interdepartmental team and others to develop framework for sustainable communities; supporting research and analysis of sustainable community strategies such as distributed, district-scale systems for energy, water, wastewater and waste and recycling; identifying strategies for reducing climate impacts related to development; providing technical assistance to developers, neighborhood groups and organizations; and, supporting team activities in meeting the City’s green building and development related policy and priorities.

Assist in shaping the City’s green building, green neighborhoods, and climate protection programs. Position will serve as the primary lead for sustainable communities and will recommend and develop codes and policies, plan and coordinate education and outreach activities, provide technical assistance, recommend financial and development incentives, and report on program evaluation objectives. Position will serve as the program lead for sustainable communities with customers and other City departments. Projects may include: neighborhood plan updates; LEED-ND pilot projects; City or neighborhood driven sustainable community frameworks; and other related projects. Position will provide technical and policy expertise to department management, elected officials, industry groups, and community groups. Position makes budget recommendations and manages resources allocated toward work plan.

This position will require contact with industry organizations, utilities, professional firms and non-profits with similar interests in advancing sustainable communities within government. This position will frequently make presentations to other departments and at local and regional forums.

Expertise in urban planning and design, sustainability principles, and government and industry related strategies for advancing sustainable community goals and objectives.
Familiarity with state-of-the-art sustainable community strategies, benchmarking tools, related codes.
Ability to develop cost / benefit analyses for specific strategies.
Provide technical assistance on sustainable communities with focus on identifying technical resources, financial assistance and partnerships.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Urban Planning and Design, Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, Environmental Science, Economics, or a related field. Requires five years experience in project management, planning and research related to urban planning, urban design, or climate protection and green building. Preferable for green building expertise to include: professional accreditation for LEED™ (LEED AP). Knowledge of personal computer and various office software applications.
