Mountains to Sound Greenway: Youth Coordinator
Position Description: The Youth Coordinator will
Further develop and grow a program of youth involvement and education in the Mountains to Sound Greenway. The Greenway currently plans and coordinates several hundred volunteer events each year doing tree planting, invasive plant removal, trail work and other enhancements on public lands in the corridor. These events include regular weekend events and specialized events for groups, with high rates of youth involvement. This person will work with the Volunteer Program Coordinator, Education Coordinator, and other Greenway staff to develop youth-specific programming. The Youth Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating and leading youth stewardship events in order to both create a safe, fun, educational environment for participants and to assist the Greenway in meeting its restoration and resource maintenance goals. This position is ideal for an outgoing, energetic, organized individual with experience working with youth and a passion for the outdoors.
Reports to: Volunteer Program Coordinator
Responsibilities: The Youth Coordinator is responsible for the following:
• Developing a growing and sustainable youth program, with creation of activities, protocols, and volunteer base.
• Coordinating the stewardship component of the Greenway’s Education Program, including development of educational activities, leadership at field events, and being a liaison between Education and Stewardship programs.
• Increasing youth participation in Greenway volunteer activities by effective outreach—presentations to the public and preparation and distribution of youth-specific volunteer outreach materials online, through mailings, newsletter articles, and media announcements.
• Managing youth volunteer recruitment, signup and recognition
• Leading field events in the Greenway 2-3 days per week, including Saturdays, while providing a safe and fun environment for volunteers
• Developing long-term relationships with individuals and volunteer groups
• Develop educational activities and materials for variety of youth age groups
• Strengthening public understanding of the Greenway through education at volunteer and other events
• Other tasks as requested
Qualifications:
• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Proven personal initiative and ability to handle multiple tasks and projects in a fast paced environment, to prioritize, use good judgment, and problem solve.
• Demonstrated experience working with youth and developing educational activities
• Strong written communication and public speaking skills
• Strong organizational skills and personal initiative
• Professional demeanor
• Verified experience in coordinating and supervising volunteers
• Education or experience in natural resource fields
• Standard computer skills as well as verified experience with database management (including Microsoft Office, especially Access)
• Reliable transportation
• Valid driver’s license with insurable driving record.
• Experience with restoration and/or trail maintenance techniques desired.
• Wilderness First Aid (or higher) and CPR training desired.
Salary: Depends on Experience. Includes excellent medical, vacation, and retirement benefits.
Work Schedule: Full time regular position with flexible schedule, including weekends and occasional evenings.
Work Location: The primary work location is at the Greenway Trust office in downtown Seattle, however the position also requires regular travel to sites along the Greenway for meetings and volunteer events.
