BACKGROUND & SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY
The Cascadia Region Green Building Council (Cascadia) seeks a Washington State Director for our Seattle office. The Washington State Director is responsible for planning and implementing all of Cascadia’s programs in the State of Washington in collaboration with regional staff and WA volunteer groups (Branches), maintaining strong relationships with partner organizations and fundraising with the goal of improving the sustainability of the built environment.
This is a position of leadership within a fast-paced, mission-driven organization. Applicants must care deeply about the environment and have a keen interest in green building. The Cascadia Region Green Building Council (Cascadia) promotes the design, construction and operation of buildings in Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live, work and learn. Cascadia is one of the first Chapters of the US and Canada
Green Building Councils a coalition of North America’s foremost leaders from across the building industry.
The organization’s annual operating budget is $2.4 million with 12 full-time employees, 3 part-time employees, and a 20 member volunteer Board of Directors from across Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska. We

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Programmatic
• Develop and implement effective program strategies to accelerate the adoption of green building practices, with a focus on Washington
• Develop, plan and implement green building workshops, presentations and training seminars to building professionals, public agencies, community organizations, and the general public. For most of these workshops, other speakers/presenters will be utilized.
• Conduct events in collaboration with potential partners including but not limited to the City of Seattle, King County, State of WA, BetterBricks, AIA, ASHRAE, AGC, ULI, BOMA, IFMA, IIDA, ASID, SDTI, Northwest EcoBuilding Guild, Healthy Building Network, the Enterprise Foundation and several universities, USGBC, Washington State Department of Ecology, and Washington State Department of General Administration
• Help plan an annual regional green building conference
• Assist fellow Cascadia staff and Board members periodically on other programs as needed
• Travel at least one to two times per month to other parts of region including OR and BC
• Implement PR, marketing and media strategies
• Assist the Seattle, Tacoma-Olympia, Inland (Spokane) and NW Washington volunteer branch/committees achieve their primary program and strategic goals
• Reach out to smaller communities to promote green building and sustainable development
• Recruit people to join Cascadia’s individual membership program. Membership targets will be established.
• Design and implement effective systems for tracking the performance of green building programs
Fundraising
• Prepare funding requests related to green building programs for potential major donors
• Meet fundraising targets through Cascadia’s Friends of Cascadia annual sponsorship program. More information about this program can be found on Cascadia’s website (http://www.cascadiagbc.org/sponsorship)
• Solicit program sponsorships
Management
• Provide day-to-day oversight and reporting on program budgets and activities
• Help with strategic and business planning to contribute to the future of a growing organization
• Oversee and evaluate performance of Assistant Washington Director, volunteers and interns
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
• A passion for Cascadia’s mission. Enthusiasm for representing a dynamic, environmental organization.
• Entrepreneurial, business and fundraising skills.
• Self-motivation and initiative. Ability to work effectively with minimal direction – a self starter.
• Minimum 5-10 years of experience
• Experience effectively managing staff and volunteers.
• Proven organizational skills and project management experience. Projects may include development of educational content, advocacy, strategic planning and research. Ability to coordinate a large volume of complex projects of varying scope and size simultaneously while keeping track of the big picture.
• Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of people representing different organizations, backgrounds and experiences.
• Friendly, outgoing nature and an eagerness to serve the public interest. A good sense of humor is greatly desired. An ability to go with the flow in a fast pace, high-energy organization is a key to success in this job.
• Proficient writing and communication skills—a proven ability to write clearly and request funds from major donors face-to-face.
• Strong, compelling presentation skills and knowledge of presentation tools like PowerPoint or Keynote.
• Self-sufficient office skills: ability to work with MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint.
• Bachelor’s degree required as a minimum with Master’s Degree preferred. Professional degree related to building industry strongly desired (architect, engineer, contractor, etc.)
• Knowledge of green building design, construction strategies, technologies and materials, and the ability to articulate the environmental, health, and economic benefits of green building.
Desirable:
• Experience securing corporate sponsorships and planning events and conferences.
• Experience with marketing and communications work.
• Experience working in a non-profit setting with a mission-driven staff and board.
• A LEED Accredited Professional is preferred but not required, so long as the candidate is willing to successfully complete the LEED Accredited Professional examination within three months of being hired.
• Experience with design and construction practices.
• Familiarity with Macintosh computers and programs
• Understanding of the political process and ability to navigate the political arena
COMPENSATION
Salary range is commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits include three weeks of paid vacation annually, fully paid health and dental insurance for employee and all legal dependents, and employer contributions to a retirement fund equal to 8% of gross salary.
