Alaska Energy Campaigner - Sierra Club Coal Campaign

We know the single most important thing we can do to avert catastrophic climate change is to move away from coal fired power and to do that we have to create the opportunity for, and energize the development of renewables. The Sierra Club is looking for an experienced organizer to work on coal issues in Alaska as part of Sierra Club’s National Coal Campaign. This position coordinates a volunteer based education effort on coal and related energy and conservation issues in Alaska. Job located in Anchorage, Alaska. Requires extensive travel.

Job Activities:

1. Works to develop strong Sierra Club committees and presence in the region on issues of environmental quality and environmental justice.
2. Collaborates in development of campaign strategy and implementation, including developing strong grassroots networks.
3. Represents Sierra Club to the public and in the media, including developing public education and media strategy.
4. Develops positive working relationships with existing coalitions on issues such as clean air and environmental justice; works to build and sustain issue coalitions.
5. Educates and trains volunteer leaders, including writing training materials.
6. Lobbies public officials on issues of importance to Sierra Club.
7. Coordinates preparation of special reports and other publications and alerts.
8. Attends various issue committee and regional conservation meetings.
9. Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.

Knowledge and Skills:

-- B.A./B.S. degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science or a closely related field.
-- 1-2 years’ experience in the environmental field that includes research and organizing campaigns, press relations and public speaking.
-- Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.
-- Good written and oral communication skills
-- Prior experience and ability writing training and information materials.
-- Prior experience and knowledge of the legislative process.
-- Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
